Let’s stop pretending

I’m here to tell you that not everyone
will understand your poetry and that’s
OK. I don’t think we should rate each other’s poetry;
past a certain point, who’s to say whose honesty is
better, really?

I’m done with pretending to understand poetry just because
everyone else thinks it’s good. Let’s stop pretending
to understand poetry we don’t. Not everyone will
understand your poetry. Let’s stop expecting everyone to
understand our language. Not everyone will understand
your sadness and that’s
OK.

Even further, I’m going to stop pretending to like poetry
I don’t even understand. Art is too sacred to turn us into
liars. We can be supportive without being dishonest. Maybe
then, love will mean something again. When someone loves
your words — your poetry — does it not mean they understand
your language, but speak it too? What more do we want
than that?

You don’t need everyone. You just need one person who
gets you.
